the name // initial research

I spent two evenings searching. Not a name search — a trace. The name does not appear in any context that would make a person real: no social profiles, no news, no professional registry. What it does appear in is indirect. A dissolved business registration from eleven years ago, filed in a state where I have no connections, with an address that no longer exists as a commercial property. A cached index entry from a forum that was taken down six years before I had any reason to search for it, showing the name in a thread title, body not recoverable. A single line in a PDF from a municipal planning document, listed as a contact for a project that was approved and then apparently never built.

Each trace has been partially erased. Not completely. Partial erasure is harder to do correctly than complete erasure, and partial erasure leaves the shape of what was there. Whatever process cleaned this up did not do a thorough job, or did not expect someone to be looking for the seams between what was removed and what was left. I am looking for the seams.

The business registration address corresponds to a block in a part of the city I know. I have been in that area. I have documented things in that area. I am not going to say which area until I have been there again with that knowledge and confirmed what I think I am going to confirm.
