The Seam Wasn't There In June
corner utility box, new angled piece welded to the top edge, seam and paint mismatch visible
The box on the corner by the lot has a new piece on it. not new paint, not new graffiti, an actual addition, a slab welded onto the top edge that was not there in June, I have four pictures of that corner going back to spring and none of them show it, the one from June fourteenth is flat across the top like every other box on that stretch, square, boring, nothing. the one from last week has the angle. a wedge. like somebody cut a piece off a different box entirely and grafted it on crooked and didn't bother matching the paint, you can see the seam if you get close enough, the metal there is a shade lighter, newer, it hasn't oxidized the same way the rest of the box has and that's not a guess that's just what new steel looks like sitting next to old steel.
maybe its a city utility box or maybe its not a utility box at all, I go back and forth, there could be a plaque bolted near the base, I havent gotten close enough to read it twice because a maintenance van keeps parking right against it blocking the base entirely, which fine, could be nothing, except it is always that van and it is always that exact spot and something is always parked in front of it now like they know. the wedge points up and across the street at the tower, third floor, I counted the windows twice and got four the first time and five the second time which bothers me more than I want it to say out loud, and the lights on that floor are on the same two hours every night, 9 to 11, like clockwork, like a shift. my father worked shift work his whole life, never missed a day, unwell in a completely different direction than I am I guess. Anyway. the box didnt used to point anywhere. now it points at a floor with a schedule.
sorry for the length on this one, I know the box posts dont get the traffic the truck ones do. this is the same shape of problem as the camera that showed up at the garage, infrastructure that answers to nobody, standing somewhere it wasnt standing before and nobody willing to say who signed off on it. I went back Tuesday, no, it was Wednesday, doesnt matter, and the seam is still there and the paint still doesnt match and the plaque is still unreadable because somethings always parked in front of it now. four windows. five windows, if your still counting. a flat top that became a wedge sometime between June and whatever this is. Coincidence? no. I DONT KNOW WHO SIGNED OFF ON IT but somebody did.
