the ledger // four honest clocks and one liar

The record, before it changes. I am putting it here exactly as the frames printed it, because paraphrase is how they get you. Paraphrase is a solvent. Numbers or nothing.

CCTV 202, I-10 east of Ford Street. Header 12:04:03 AM. Bar 00:04:08. Five seconds.
CCTV 604, north of Stoddard Wells Road. Header 12:03:05 AM. Bar 00:03:10. Five seconds.
CCTV 168, Route 210 at Knox Avenue. Header 12:02:04 AM. Bar 00:02:10. Six seconds.
CCTV 257, the Nuevo onramp. Header 12:14:32 AM. Bar 00:02:07. Seven hundred and forty five seconds.

evidence

Five seconds is a machine breathing. Six seconds is a machine breathing through its nose. Seven hundred and forty five seconds is not breathing, it is a second set of books. And before you ask, I checked the camera that sits between 168 and 257 so the record would be continuous. Ethanac Road. Ethanac Road did not give me a clock at all. It gave me two words. Temporarily Unavailable. A road does not go temporarily unavailable, a road is the most permanently available thing there is. Somebody rested that camera the same night the one up the road learned to run ahead, and I am supposed to file that under coincidence with a straight face.

There is one more thing and I want to be careful with it, because it is the kind of thing that gets a whole record laughed at. At 12:02 by the honest clocks I looked at the Knox frame. Really looked. And low in the dark, where the ground is, where nothing has ever been, there is a light that has no business being in the frame. I am not saying what I think it is up here where everyone can see. It is written down below.
